Abstract

Over the years inter-governmental relations have become very fundamental in the administration of countries all over the world, more importantly in the countries practicing federal system of government. In Nigeria for instance, inter-governmental relations has become so important in the operation of the Nigerian state that inter-governmental relations has institutionalized virtually every aspect of government operation. In a setting of the federal system of government, no single government can succeed without the support and deliberate efforts of the other two levels of government. On this note, Erunke and Mbumega (2014) averred that no single government could achieve radical improvements in service delivery on its own, which means that symbiotic collaboration, coordination and cooperation are essential conditions. There are so many system of government world over which include federal system, unitary system, confederation etc. This study decides to dwell much on federal system of government which is currently in practice in Nigeria. Federal system is a system of governance in which power is shared between a central authority (Federal government) and constituent political units (states and the Local governments), this arrangement plays a significant role in the administrative frameworks of various countries including the United States, Germany, India and Nigeria to mention but few. This structure simplifies a multi-tiered governance model comprising federal, state, and local governments, each with separate responsibilities and levels of autonomy (Adeola et al., 2024).
