QUEST FOR IDENTITY AS DEPICTED IN ANGELA NGOZI DICK’S ASSUMPTA: COLLEGE REMINISCENCES
Abstract
This research explores the theme of identity in Dick's novel, Assumpta: College Reminiscences, focusing on how the family, society, and personal experiences shape young Nigerians' sense of self. The study analyzes four main characters: Assumpta, Catena, Femi, and Nanu, examining their struggles with identity formation amidst societal expectations and personal choices. The characters in the text navigate societal norms while asserting their autonomy and self-definition. The research examines how parents and teachers play roles in shaping young people’s identities by providing support, guidance, and creating environments conducive for personal growth. The research also emphasizes that books and debates have significant psychological and emotional impact on youth by influencing their self-awareness and identity. The study promotes the Sustainable Development Goal 10, "Reduced Inequality," by emphasizing the need for equality to foster a supportive environment for identity exploration.
