Abstract

This research study was carried out to evaluate the fermented extract of plantain pseudostem on soil bacteria and to access the growth performance of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus). The treatment samples of the fermented extract and one control sample were used for the analysis. The result obtained revealed that sample A (normal top soil) had the highest bacterial count of 8.5x105cfu/s while sample B and C (soil treated with fermented extract) had a lower bacterial count of 7.2x105cfu/s and 6.3x105cfu/s respectively. The bacteria genera isolated include Bacillus sp Pseudomonas Sp, enterococcus sp Enterobacter sp, confricbacterium sp and flavorbacterium sp. The result obtained reveals that the fermented extract of plantain pseudostem affects the bacteria populations, interaction, activities, as well as ecosystem due to its composition of bioactive compound and the phytochemical nutrient which might alter the soil sample pH, temperature, moisture content and oxygen demand. The result obtained also indicate a significant increase in growth parameters of okra in sample B and C with height of 14.8cm and 14.2cm. Therefore it can be deduced that the application of fermented extract of plantain pseudostem significantly increased the growth performance of Abelmoschus esculentus.
