Abstract

The assessment of the microbiological standard of swimming pool in selected hotek within Ikot Ekpene metropolis. was carried out using standard microbiological ological techniques. The study revealed that swimming pool water sample D recorded the highest bacterial counts (4.26 x 10 cfu/ml), samples C (1.18 x 107 cfu/ml), pool sample B (9.0 x 106 cfu/ml), while water sample A had counts of (4.5 x 106 cfu/ml) as the least. Fungal load revealed that swimming pool water sample A and C recorded the highest fungal counts (0.8 x 10 cfu/ml) each respectively, samples B (0.4 x 105 cfu/ml), while water sample D' had counts of (0.2 x 10 cfu/ml) as the least. The study revealed the presence of live (5) bacteria genera to include Pseudomonas sp. coagulase negative Staphylococcus sp. SSD. Citrobacter sp, Enterobacter and coagulase positive Staphylococcus to include Absidia sp, coccus sp and four (4) fungal genera sp, Penicillium sp. Avergillus sp and Trichophyton sp. Coagulase negative Staphylococcus sp frequency and percentage recorded highest fre the Pseudomonas so. centage occurrence 146(21.5%), 141(20.8%), Citrobacter sp. 37(20.2%), coagulase positive Staphylococcus sp 135(19.90), while Enterobacter sp 120(17.7%) as the least. Penicillium sp recorded the highest frequency and percentage occurrence 7(31.1%). Aspergilus sp 6(27.3%), Trichophyton sp 5(22.7%), while Absidia sp 4(18.2%) as the least. All the swimming pools examined in this study were contaminated. One swimming pools had bacterial counts above the recommended bacteriological standards for pool water. It is still needful for all the authorities concerned to apply standard corrective measures in order to provide good quality water for the numerous users.
