Abstract

ABSTRACT This research assesses the current situation of school libraries in public secondary schools in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State. Out of 34 government secondary schools in the area, only 22 were identified to have functioning library facilities, which formed the focus of this study. Using a qualitative research approach, the study employed semi-structured interviews with head librarians and direct field observations to explore the availability, resources, usage, and challenges facing school libraries. The findings revealed critical deficiencies, Including inadequate funding, poor infrastructure, absence of professional librarians, outdated collections, and lack of ICT facilities. Most libraries were underutilized and poorly integrated into the academic life of the schools. Despite these challenges, respondents provided valuable suggestions for improving library conditions. The study concludes that significant intervention is necessary from stakeholders, especially government authorities, to revitalize school libraries. Recommendations include increased funding, recruitment of trained staff, curriculum integration, and resource acquisition. The research contributes to the knowledge of library development in rural Nigerian schools and serves as a reference for future initiatives.
