PHYTOCHEMICAL PROFILING AND IN VITRO EVALUATION OF THE ANTI-INFLAMMATION POTENTIAL OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF TREMA ORIENTALIS STEM BARK
Abstract
Inflammatory response is orchestrated by a complex network of molecular-mediators which regulate immune cell activation, migration, and tissue responses. Medicinal plants have been integral to human healthcare for millennia, serving as the foundation for many modern pharmaceuticals. Trema orientalis (L.) Blume, commonly known as charcoal tree, pigeon wood, or gunpowder tree, or Yoruba is “Afefe. Crude ethanol extract of T. orientalis stem bark (CETO) was assessed for its anti-inflammatory activity by in vitro method. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using albumin denaturation assay, proteinase inhibitory activity, membrane stabilization, and anti-lipoxygenase activity at different concentrations. Diclofenac sodium and Indomethacin were used as standard drugs.
The results showed that CETO at concentration range of 100-500µg/ml significantly (p
