Abstract

Journalism is an important profession in every society because it provides information, promotes accountability, and supports democratic development. However, the practice of journalism is often associated with several hazards that affect the safety, welfare, and professional performance of journalists. In Nigeria, journalists face physical, political, economic, and ethical challenges in the course of carrying out their duties. This study appraises the hazards of journalism practice in Nigeria. The study examines the various dangers and risks encountered by journalists, including harassment, intimidation, poor remuneration, political pressure, insecurity, and occupational stress. Data for the study may be collected through questionnaires administered to journalists and media practitioners, as well as from relevant secondary sources. The findings are expected to reveal that journalism practice in Nigeria is affected by serious hazards such as threats to personal safety, censorship, legal pressure, inadequate welfare, and difficult working conditions. The study may also show that these challenges weaken professional performance and reduce press freedom. The study concludes that journalism practice in Nigeria is exposed to significant hazards that require urgent attention. It recommends stronger legal protection for journalists, improved welfare, professional training, and institutional support for press freedom and journalist safety.
