ASSESSMENT OF CARBON STOCK OF AVENUE TREES AT WESTERN CAMPUS OF ADEKUNLE AJASIN UNIVERSITY, AKUGBA AKOKO, ONDO STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
The world is presently experiencing fast development and urbanization which has cause an
increase in the carbon emission which contributes to greenhouse gases and global warming. This
study was aimed at assessing the carbon stock of avenue trees around western gate of Adekunle
Ajasin University Akungba Akoko. These avenue trees were identified, enumerated and
measured. Their densities were obtained from the literature for biomass, carbon and carbon
dioxide estimation. A total of 124 individual trees were encountered with 18 tree species and 11
families. The results revealed that Gmelina arborea had the highest carbon stock of 25.34 kg and
carbon dioxide of 95.71 kg, followed by Acacia auriculiformis with carbon and carbon dioxide
of 4.67 kg and 17.16 kg, respectively. The total of 96.02 kg, 48.01kg and 176.19 kg of biomass,
carbon and carbon dioxide were sequestered by the trees in the study area. Consequently, these
avenue trees around the western gate have the potential to absorb a significant amount of CO2
from the atmosphere thereby contributing to mitigating the effects of climate change.
