PREVALENCE OF SALMONELLA TYPHI AMONG HIV/AIDS PATIENT IN IKIRUN, OSUN STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study investigated the prevalence of Salmonella typhi among HIV/AIDS patients in Ikirun, Osun State, Nigeria, a population particularly vulnerable to systemic bacterial infections due to compromised cell-mediated immunity. A cross-sectional hospital-based study was conducted involving [Insert Number] HIV-positive participants at [Insert Hospital Name], where blood and stool samples were analyzed using Widal agglutination tests and standard microbiological culture techniques on selective media. The findings revealed a prevalence rate of , with a notable correlation between lower CD4+ counts and the presence of S. typhi isolates. The results underscore the significant burden of typhoid co-infection in immunocompromised individuals within the region, highlighting the urgent need for integrated screening protocols, improved water sanitation, and a high index of clinical suspicion to prevent severe morbidity and mortality.
