ASSESSMENT OF HISTOLOGICAL CHANGES IN THE TISSUE (GILL) OF THE CAT FISH EXPOSED TO THE EFFLUENT COLLECTED FROM PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY IN ILORIN, KWARA STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Pharmaceutical effluents primarily enter aquatic environments by discharging treated and untreated wastewater from various sources, including hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, and households. . The physiochemical parameters were detected and the heavy metals analysis was carried out using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP OES) The cat fishes were exposed to the pharmaceutical effluent and their behavior was observed every 12 hours for up to three days. Haemotological studies was done on the plasma collected from the fish. The physicochemical analysis and the ICP OES revealed that the wastewater sample has a pH of 6.3, Temperature,26.0, TDS of 211 (Mg/l), Turbidity (14.2), Electrical Conductivity (886), BOD (24.8), COD(28.1) and some heavy metals like Arsenic, Ar(0.034816), Lead (Pb) of 0.021105, Chromium (Cr) (0.163880) and Cadmium (Cd) (0.019974), Cu (0.114682). The tissues examined (gill) had various forms of alterations in their structures.
