IMPACT OF A FRESH FM RADIO PROGRAMME HEALTH IS WEALTH (ILERALORO) ON THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF THE PEOPLE IN IDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT.
Abstract
This study examines the impact of the Fresh FM Ibadan radio programme “Health is
Wealth (Ilera Loro)” on the health and well-being of residents in Ido Local Government
Area, Oyo State, Nigeria. The programme, broadcast in Yoruba language, was designed
to promote health literacy, improve health-seeking behaviours, and enhance overall well-
being among the populace. The research aimed to evaluate the extent to which exposure
to the programme has influenced knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding health.
A mixed-methods research design was adopted, combining quantitative surveys of 400
respondents with qualitative focus group discussions (FGDs). Respondents were selected
through a multistage sampling process. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics,
inferential tests, and thematic analysis to provide comprehensive insights into programme
outcomes.
Findings revealed that 64% of respondents had listened to “Ilera Loro” at least once,
while 46% reported regular listenership (daily or weekly). Recall of programme topics
was high, particularly for immunization (35%), malaria prevention (30%), and
maternal/child health (25%). Knowledge outcomes showed that frequent listeners had
significantly higher health knowledge scores (mean = 7.6/10) compared to occasional or
non-listeners (mean = 5.8/10). Attitudes were also positively shaped, with 72% of
respondents perceiving the programme as trustworthy and 65% reporting improved
confidence in accessing health facilities.
Behavioural outcomes indicated that listening to the programme influenced actions such
as child immunization (38%), sanitation improvements (34%), and use of insecticide-
treated nets (26%). Regression analysis confirmed that frequent listenership was a
significant predictor of positive health behaviour. However, key barriers—including
economic constraints, poor healthcare service availability, cultural beliefs, and language
limitations—restricted the full adoption of recommended practices.
The study concludes that “Ilera Loro” is an effective medium for health education,
capable of raising awareness and influencing positive behaviours in communities.
Nevertheless, structural and socio-economic barriers limit its overall impact. It
recommends continued broadcasting of the programme, greater involvement of health
workers, integration with healthcare services, provision of economic support
mechanisms, and the use of culturally sensitive approaches to strengthen outcomes.
This research contributes to the growing evidence that radio remains a powerful and cost-
effective tool for health promotion in low-resource settings. By bridging the gap between
knowledge and action, programmes like “Health is Wealth (Ilera Loro)” can play a
crucial role in improving public health outcomes in Nigeria.
