INFLUENCE OF MOTIVATION ON EFFECTIVENESS OF JOURNALIST IN OSOGBO OSUN STATE
Abstract
Abstract
This study examines the influence of motivation on the effectiveness of journalists in Oshogbo, Osun State. The role of journalists in society is critical, as they serve as watchdogs, inform the public, and contribute to democratic development. However, their effectiveness is largely dependent on the level of motivation they receive in their professional environment. This research investigates how both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors affect journalists’ performance, productivity, and job satisfaction.
The study adopts a survey research design, with data collected through structured questionnaires administered to journalists working in selected media organizations in Oshogbo. A sample size of respondents was drawn using a simple random sampling technique. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency counts, percentages, and tables.
Findings from the study reveal that motivation significantly influences journalists’ effectiveness. Factors such as salary, job security, working conditions, recognition, and opportunities for career advancement were identified as key determinants of motivation. The study further shows that poorly motivated journalists are more likely to exhibit low productivity, lack of commitment, and reduced quality of news reporting, while highly motivated journalists demonstrate increased efficiency, creativity, and professionalism.
The study concludes that motivation plays a vital role in enhancing the effectiveness of journalists in Oshogbo. It recommends that media organizations should improve welfare packages, provide regular training, ensure timely payment of salaries, and create a conducive working environment to boost journalists’ morale and performance.
