Abstract

Water scarcity and pollution have necessitated the development of effective filtration systems for treating grey water. This study presents a comparative analysis of the performance of two filter media (Biochar and Activated Carbon) in improving grey water quality. Key parameters such as flow rate, pH reduction, turbidity removal, and colour reduction were examined. The results indicate that Biochar exhibits a higher flow rate (6.15 l/min) compared to Activated Carbon (2.54 l/min), making it suitable for applications requiring faster filtration. However, Activated Carbon demonstrated superior performance in reducing turbidity (44.2%), lowering pH (54.22%), and enhancing colour removal (48.82%), indicating its greater effectiveness in improving water quality. While Biochar allows faster water passage, Activated Carbon provides better purification efficiency. A combination of both materials is recommended to balance filtration speed and contaminant removal for optimal grey water treatment.
