Abstract

Abstract This study examines the perceived uses of social media and its influence on the mental health of students of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree. With the rapid growth of digital communication platforms, social media has become an integral part of students’ daily lives, serving purposes such as information sharing, entertainment, social interaction, and academic engagement. However, concerns have emerged regarding its potential effects on users’ psychological well-being. The objectives of the study were to identify the major uses of social media among students, assess students’ perceptions of its impact, and evaluate the extent to which social media influences their mental health. The study adopted a survey research design, using a structured questionnaire to collect data from a representative sample of students across different departments in the institution. Findings revealed that the majority of students frequently use social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for communication, relaxation, and academic purposes. While some respondents reported positive outcomes such as improved connectivity, access to information, and emotional support, others indicated negative effects including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and reduced academic concentration. The study also found that excessive use and exposure to unrealistic online content significantly contribute to mental health challenges among students. The study concludes that although social media offers several benefits, its misuse and overdependence can adversely affect students’ mental health. It is therefore recommended that students adopt responsible usage habits, educational institutions should create awareness on the psychological effects of social media, and counseling services should be strengthened to support students experiencing mental health issues.
