Abstract

This study investigates the effect of internal audit on the financial performance of a local government. Internal auditing plays a crucial role in ensuring accountability, transparency, and efficient use of public funds. The study adopts a descriptive research design using primary and secondary data sources. Questionnaires were administered to staff of the selected local government, and financial records were analyzed. Findings reveal that effective internal audit systems significantly improve financial performance by reducing fraud, enhancing compliance, and promoting efficient resource utilization. However, challenges such as lack of independence, inadequate staffing, and limited resources affect the effectiveness of internal audit functions. The study concludes that strengthening internal audit practices is essential for improving financial performance in local governments.
