Abstract

This study examined the influence of extracurricular activities on the academic achievement of junior secondary school students in Akungba, Ondo State, Nigeria. The research was motivated by concerns about how participation in non-academic engagements may support or hinder educational outcomes. A descriptive survey design was employed, with a sample of 200 students selected through stratified random sampling from ten public and private schools. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed with descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation) as well as inferential statistics, including correlation, t-test, and regression analysis. Results revealed a significant positive relationship between extracurricular participation and academic achievement (r = 0.428, p < 0.05). Sports-related activities were found to have a stronger effect on academic performance than non-sports activities (t = 2.36, p = 0.020), while regression analysis confirmed that extracurricular involvement significantly predicts students’ academic success (β = 0.387, p < 0.001). Personal interest, teacher encouragement, and peer influence emerged as major motivators for participation, although a small proportion of students reported skipping classes or repeating a class due to overcommitment. The study concludes that extracurricular activities contribute positively to students’ holistic development and academic outcomes when effectively balanced with schoolwork. It recommends that schools, parents, and policymakers provide adequate facilities, balanced timetables, and guidance to ensure students benefit fully from structured extracurricular programs.
