PROBLEMS OF ACQUISITION OF LIBRARY MATERIALS IN FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTER KATSINA LIBRARY
Abstract
Libraries are world-wide phenomenon. They occur in variety of societies (academic, special or
public) in differing cultures (digital, traditional or virtual) and at different stages of development
(hybrid etc). Although, the varied contexts in which they operate inevitably result in differences
in the services they provide, and the way those services are delivered. A special library however,
needs to respond to the changing boundaries of the disciplines of concern as well as the shifts in
the research fronts – Medical Library inclusive. These changes and newer directives of the
national policies are reflected in libraries through their collection development and services.
Equally, the field of medicine has undergone several major changes – some due to the increased
depth of knowledge in specialty areas and others due to closer interaction and better
understanding of the context in which the field is practiced. This research work seeks to explore
“Problems of Acquisition of Library Materials in Federal Medical Center Katsina” with a
view to determine Methods, Criteria as well as the problems in relation to the acquisition policies
of a medical library within the case study area. Under this, comprehensive literature review, in
depth interview and close- ended questionnaire are applied.
