Abstract

This study examines the effects of trauma reporting on the mental health of journalists in Osun State, Nigeria. Journalism, particularly in the area of reporting traumatic events such as accidents, violence, disasters, and abuse, exposes practitioners to significant psychological stress. The study aims to assess the prevalence of mental health issues among journalists, identify the types of traumatic events they frequently cover, examine coping mechanisms, and evaluate the level of organizational support available. A survey research design was adopted, and data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to 150 journalists across radio, television, and print media organizations in Osun State. The data were analyzed using simple percentages and frequency tables. Findings revealed that a majority of journalists frequently report on traumatic events, with natural disasters, accidents, and violent crimes being the most common. Many respondents reported experiencing mild to moderate emotional impact, including stress, anxiety, and psychological discomfort. Coping strategies varied, with some relying on social support and personal resilience, while others adopted avoidance mechanisms. The study also found inadequate institutional support systems for addressing journalists’ mental health challenges. The study concludes that trauma reporting significantly affects journalists’ mental well-being and recommends the implementation of mental health support programs, trauma awareness training, and organizational policies to safeguard journalists. These measures are essential to promoting both the well-being of journalists and the quality of journalism practice.
