Abstract

This study investigates the accessibility, usage, and impact of social media on the academic performance of students at the Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State. In recent years, social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Telegram have become central to students’ daily lives, influencing how they communicate, study, and access academic resources. The study adopts a descriptive survey research design and utilizes a structured questionnaire to collect data from 387 randomly selected students across various departments. Findings reveal that while social media is widely accessible and frequently used by students, its effect on academic performance is dual-natured: positively enhancing learning when used for academic purposes and negatively affecting performance when overused for non-academic activities. The study concludes that guided and purposeful usage of social media can contribute meaningfully to academic achievement. It recommends increased digital literacy, the integration of academic content on social platforms, and the implementation of institutional policies to promote responsible use among students.
