ASSESSMENT OF THE ROLE OF RADIO IN THE CAMPAIGN FOR PUBLIC HYGIENE AMONG THE RESIDENTS OF OFFA
Abstract
This research evaluates the role of radio in promoting public hygiene among residents of Offa, Kwara State. The study investigates how radio campaigns create awareness, educate listeners, and encourage the adoption of hygienic practices to enhance public health. Employing a descriptive survey design, data were collected from a sample of 384 residents through structured questionnaires. The findings reveal that radio serves as a critical medium for disseminating public hygiene messages, particularly in reaching rural and semi-literate populations. Programs broadcast in local dialects and featuring relatable content were identified as particularly effective in driving behavioral change. However, barriers such as irregular access to radios, inconsistent program scheduling, and limited listener engagement through interactive segments were noted. The study underscores radio's unique ability to combine education with entertainment, leveraging storytelling and expert interviews to address misconceptions about hygiene practices. Key hygiene topics covered include waste management, proper handwashing techniques, and environmental sanitation, which significantly influenced listeners' practices. Despite its impact, the study identifies areas for improvement, such as expanding the frequency of hygiene-focused programs, using targeted jingles, and enhancing community feedback mechanisms to tailor content to local needs. The research concludes that radio remains an indispensable tool for public health communication, offering wide coverage, affordability, and cultural adaptability. It recommends stronger collaborations between radio stations, health agencies, and community leaders to improve program content and reach. Additionally, the integration of other media channels, such as social media and community events, could complement radio campaigns, ensuring a more holistic approach to public hygiene education. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the role of media in fostering societal well-being.
