FINANCIAL REPORTING QUALITY AND FIRM PERFORMANCE: EVIDENCE FROM UNION BANK NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examined financial reporting quality and firm performance, with evidence drawn from Union Bank plc. The research evaluates how the transparency, accuracy, and timeliness of financial reporting influence key performance indicators such as profitability, return on assets, and shareholder value. Secondary data were obtained from the bank’s audited annual reports, while statistical tools including correlation and regression analysis were employed for data evaluation. The findings reveal that high-quality financial reporting significantly enhances firm performance by promoting investor confidence, ensuring regulatory compliance, and improving managerial decision-making. The study further establishes that transparent and reliable reporting practices strengthen the bank’s market reputation and facilitate sustainable growth. It concludes that financial reporting quality is an essential driver of firm performance and recommends that Nigerian banks should prioritize adherence to international financial reporting standards, strengthen internal control systems, and embrace ethical disclosure practices to ensure long-term value creation.
