Abstract

Abstract Access to clean and safe drinking water remains a significant public health challenge in many developing regions. This study investigates the bacteriological and physicochemical quality of household well water in DorayiTunga, Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State, Nigeria. The primary focus is the isolation, identification, and enumeration of coliform bacteria, particularly Escherichia coli, as indicators of fecal contamination. A total of 20 water samples were collected from selected household wells and analyzed using multiple tube fermentation, Gram staining, and biochemical tests such as catalase, oxidase, and coagulase. Results revealed the presence of E. coli in three out of ten tested samples, indicating fecal contamination. Physicochemical analysis showed that most water samples were acidic (pH 5.01–5.7), with acceptable levels of total dissolved solids (TDS) and total suspended solids (TSS). However, heavy metal analysis indicated dangerously high levels of lead in one sample (250.000 mg/l) and excessive copper concentrations in all samples, exceeding WHO and NSDWQ standards. The findings suggest significant microbiological and chemical contamination risks, emphasizing the need for improved sanitation, regular monitoring, and provision of potable water to prevent waterborne diseases in the community.
