Abstract

This research looked at the impact of soil pH on crop cultivation in Bunkure area, Kano State. A total of 6 samples were collected with an auger from a depth of 0- 15cm and analyzed for soil pH using standard analytical methods. The findings from the study indicated that laboratory analysis of soil pH levels in Bunkure, Kano State, indicate that the sampled farm locations possess soil pH values that is favorable for the cultivation of maize, sorghum, and millet. Maize fields recorded an average pH of 6.41, sorghum fields had a mean pH of 5.97, while millet fields exhibited a higher mean pH of 7.10. The correlation analysis further demonstrated a positive relationship between soil pH and crop yield for all three crops. Millet showed the strongest positive correlation (+0.72), followed by maize (+0.65), and sorghum (+0.58), indicating that crop performance improves as soil pH approaches optimal levels. It was recommended among others that farmers should adopt routine soil pH testing before planting to determine the suitability of their land for specific crops. Also, government agricultural extension services and NGOs should provide affordable or subsidized soil testing kits and training to farmers.
