EFFECT OF CHILD LABOUR ON EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AMONG PRIMARY SCHOOL PUPILS (A CASE STUDY OF BUNKURE LOCAL GOVERNMENT)
Abstract
Abstract
This research study investigates the effects of child labor on educational development among primary school pupils in Bunkure Local Government Area, Kano State. The study aims to explore the prevalence of child labor, its impact on academic performance, school attendance, and dropout rates, and the socio-economic factors that contribute to this issue. A descriptive correlational research design was employed, utilizing structured questionnaires administered to a sample of 100 respondents, including pupils and their guardians.
Findings indicate that approximately 65% of the respondents are involved in various forms of child labor, primarily in agricultural and domestic work. The study reveals significant negative correlations between child labor involvement and academic performance, with 35% of the respondents reporting poor academic performance and 30% exhibiting irregular school attendance. Socio-economic factors such as poverty, cultural norms, and family pressure were identified as critical determinants influencing child labor participation and educational outcomes.
The results highlight the urgent need for intervention to mitigate the adverse effects of child labor on educational development. The study concludes with recommendations for policy implementation, awareness campaigns, improved access to education, and collaboration among stakeholders to address the challenges posed by child labor in the community. This research contributes to the existing literature by providing localized insights into the dynamics of child labor and education, emphasizing the need for comprehensive strategies to promote children's rights and educational attainment.
