Abstract

This research explores the portrayal of social issues in Nigerian cinema, with a focus on the seminal Nollywood film Living in Bondage. The study examines how the film reflects key societal problems such as corruption, ritualism, greed, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. Through a close analysis of the narrative, characters, and visual elements, the research investigates the role of film as a mirror of society, shedding light on the socio-economic and cultural challenges that define the Nigerian experience. Living in Bondage, widely regarded as the film that launched Nollywood into the global spotlight, offers a unique lens to understand the influence of traditional beliefs, the pressures of modernity, and the impact of materialism on Nigerian society. By deconstructing the film's themes and motifs, this research demonstrates how Nollywood filmmakers engage with pressing social issues, providing commentary and critique while entertaining audiences. Ultimately, the study underscores the power of film as a tool for social change and the importance of Nollywood as a cultural platform that raises awareness about contemporary challenges in Nigerian society.
