Abstract

This study examined the professional perceptions of finance experts regarding the influence of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) disclosure on financial decision-making within Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. In a sector marked by environmental, social, and governance challenges, CSR disclosure is increasingly recognised as a strategic tool that can enhance transparency, stakeholder trust, and long-term sustainability. The research explored whether CSR reporting genuinely informs investment planning, risk assessment, and budgeting decisions or remains a symbolic compliance exercise. Using a descriptive research design, data were collected from a purposive sample of finance professionals, including financial analysts, auditors, and managers, operating in the oil and gas sector. The study employed structured questionnaires and statistical analysis, including correlation and t-tests, to assess the relationship between CSR disclosure and financial strategy. Findings revealed that CSR disclosures are moderately integrated into financial decision-making, with varying perceptions among professionals regarding their consistency and reliability. Many respondents acknowledged that high-quality CSR reports can influence investor confidence and access to finance, especially under stakeholder and legitimacy theory frameworks. However, the lack of standardisation and transparency in some firms’ disclosures hindered their usefulness in strategic financial planning. Moreover, challenges such as regulatory gaps, economic volatility, and skepticism from host communities were identified as barriers to effective CSR integration. The study concluded that while CSR disclosure holds potential to shape financial decisions meaningfully, its impact is constrained by implementation inconsistencies. It recommended regulatory reforms, capacity building among finance professionals, and standardized CSR frameworks to enhance disclosure credibility. The findings contributed to the broader discourse on sustainable finance and corporate governance in developing economies.
