THE GEOLOGY AROUND KWARE STREAM AND ITS ENVIRONS, PART OF SHEET 152NW GOMBE STATE NORTHEAST, NIGERIA
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Field mapping, sampling and lithostratigraphic sections measurement was carried out around
Kware Stream and environs, part of Sheet 152NW Gombe State, in Gongola Basin, northeastern
Nigeria. The study aims to determine and reconstruct paleoenvironments and provenance for the
sediments. Facies decription, facies analysis, granulometric (sieve) and petrographic (thin section)
analyses were carried out on the sediments (Yolde and Pindiga formations) exposed at Kware
stream section. Based on facies, granulometry and petrography, the study revealed that the Yolde
Formation sediments were deposited in coastal shallow marine environment. The sediments are
moderately to well sorted, coarsely to moderately skewed and indicate beach sand. The study
indicates abundance of quartz while feldspar and rock fragments are also present which may
indicate distant provenance during deposition of the sediments. Based on lithological description,
the Pindiga formation (Kanawa and Fika members) consists of shale, limestone, gypsum, nodules
and concretions which indicates deposition in shelf environment under quite water condition. The
area consists of structures that are economical for petroleum traps and good aquifers.
