Abstract

ABSTRACT The project ‘’Upgrade of an Existed Solar Power System’’ in the auto-tronic lab, Mechanical Engineering Department, Kano State Polytechnic, was determined by load assessment. The former system’s panel output which was rated 0.5KVA was upgraded to 1KVA. Three 12V, 190W solar panels were added to the existed four 12V, 150W panels which summed up to 1,170W. The battery was change from dry cell to 12V, 220AH tubular. Both the inverter (3000W), and the charge controller (60A), were maintained. These were assembled together in parallel connection, with necessary protective gadgets to give the 1KVA expected. The solar panels were mounted on top of the building to allow for maximum collection of sun energy. There was an expectation of a future upgrading of the solar system, when batteries are to be added, and the charge controller to be change from 60A to 100A to boost the amperage of the system. The result after test had proved the system’s worth. It was expected that the system will help the department meet up with its laboratory and office duties even when central power is not available.
