IMPACT OF COMPENSATION MANAGEMENT PRACTICE ON EMPLOYEE’S PERFORMANCE. (A STUDY OF UNITED BANK FOR AFRICAN (UBA) ILORIN, KWARA STATE).
Abstract
Abstract
This research project critically examine the impact of compensation management practices on employee performance, using united bank for African {UBA}, Ilorin branch as a case study. In today’s competitive banking sector, employee performance plays a pivotal role in achieving organizational success, and compensation is one of the most powerful tools used by management to influence work behavior. The study focuses on how various elements of compensation –such as salaries, bonuses, incentives, allowance, and fringe benefits affect employee motivation, job satisfaction, commitment and productivity.
A descriptive survey research design was adopted to gather empirical data from the target population. The total number of staff at UBA Ilorin branch was thirty six (36). Data was collected through well-structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages), while chi-square tests were employed to test the research hypotheses.
The findings reveal that there is a strong positive relationship between compensation management and employee performance. Specifically, employees who perceive their compensation as fair, competitive, and aligned with their contributions demonstrate higher levels of motivation, reduce turnover intentions, and improve performance outcomes. Conversely, inadequate or poorly managed compensation practices were found to lower morale, increase dissatisfaction, and hinder overall productivity.
The study conclude that effective compensation management is no just a financial obligation but a strategic tool for attracting, retailing and maximizing the potential of employees. For organizations like UBA, this means continually evaluating and adjusting their compensation structures to meet both employee expectation and organizational goals. The study recommends that management adopt a performance –based compensation model, promote transparency in reward systems, and ensure regular salary reviews in line with economic realities and industry standards.
This research contributes valuable insights to the field of human resources management, especially in the Nigerian banking sectors, and provides practical recommendations for organizations aiming to enhance workforce effectiveness through strategic compensation policies.
