Abstract

In the present study, the antioxidant activity of 4. wilkesiana and S. acuta was investigated using scavenging activity at 2,2 diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and reducing power by ferric reducing antioxidant power assay. Methanol extract was found potent in both the assays. Phytochemical screening, proximate analysis and mineral analysis were also determined. Qualitative screening for phytochemical showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, glycosides and saponins. Proximate analysis showed moisture content (4.65%), ash content (6.80%), crude fibre (5.95%), total protein (21.88%), crude fat (1.5%), total carbohydrate (59.30%) and nutritive value (346.79 kcal/100g), which would make it a potential nutraceutical. The mineral analysis that Acalypha wilkesiana and Sida acuta, a potential natural free radical scavenger, which could find use as an antioxidative.
