EVOLUTION OF EYO FESTIVAL FROM INCEPTION TO CONTEMPORARY TIMES
Abstract
The Eyo Festival, an iconic cultural celebration in Nigeria, holds a significant
place in the cultural heritage of the Yoruba people, particularly in Lagos. This grand
procession of masqueraded individuals, adorned in vibrant costumes and masks, is
deeply rooted in the history and traditions of the Yoruba ethnic group. 1 The origins
of the Eyo Festival date back to the early 19th century, during the reign of Oba
Akitoye of Lagos. It is believed that the Eyo festival emerged as a way to honor
deceased monarchs and notable individuals in Yoruba society. Over the years, it has
evolved, adapting to changing cultural, social, and political landscapes
