Abstract

The acute toxicity study of the aqueous leaf extract of Meliaazedarach (Chinaberry) was conducted to evaluate its toxicological effects and identify a safe dosage range. Meliaazedarach, a tree with established traditional medicinal uses, also contains toxic components, particularly in its fruits and seeds. This study employed adult female albino rats following OECD guideline 425 (Up-and-Down Procedure) for acute oral toxicity testing. Leaves ofMeliaazedarach were collected, shade-dried, and processed into an aqueous extract. The extract was administered in doses ranging from 1000 to 5000 mg/kg body weight. Observations for clinical signs, behavioral changes, and mortality were recorded over a 14-day period postadministration. Results indicated no toxic effect observed and no mortality was found which shows leaf extract are safe for medicinal use. The LD50 was estimated to establish a safe dosage threshold for potential medicinal applications. This study highlights the importance of toxicity assessments for traditional plant-based medicines and supports the safe therapeutic use ofMeliaazedarach within specified dose limits.
