Abstract

Antibacterial activity of Danmilla Kooko herbal powder (Moringa snuff) against some selected bacterial pathogens was carried out. The study aimed at determining the in-vitro antibacterial activity of Danmilla Kooko herbal powder against Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. A solution of the powder was prepared using 5g of the powder in 100ml of sterile distilled water. Agar well and paper discs diffusion techniques were employed to determine susceptibility of test organisms, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Different concentration of the 5%, 10%, 20%, 50%, 70%, 100% were used to determine MIC by broth dilution technique. The result showed significant zone of inhibition against all bacteria ranging from Pseudomonas aeruginosa to Salmonella typhi at14.00mm to 33.00mm respectively. The preparation demonstrated broad spectrum activities against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The MIC and MBC of the mixture is between 20% and 10% respectively. Results revealed that there were significant effect of the herbal powder on the bacteria strains. The study concluded that Danmilla Kooko herbal powder prepared using Moringa oleifera, Strophanthus sarmentosus, Strophanthus hispidus, Erythrophleum guineese, Lophira alata extracts demonstrated potent antibacterial activity against selected pathogenic organisms. It is recommended that further studies on bioactive components and toxicity be carried out to determine its suitability and safety.
