NUTRITIONAL AND HEALTH BENEFITS OF PARQUETINA NIGRESCENS
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Parquetina nigrescens was investigated for its proximate, mineral and phytochemical compositions using standard analytical methods of analysis. The results indicated that Parquetina nigrescens contained high carbohydrate content (53.60%), crude fibre (15.00%), and crude fat (10.60%) with low moisture (6.50%) and ash contents (5.55%). The mineral analysis indicated the presence (ppm) of Potassium (2.355), Sodium (2.355), Copper (2.376), and Calcium (2.040), which are essential for the body and bones. The presence of zinc (1.478), phosphorus (1.111), iron (1.160), chromium (0.209), and magnesium (0.097) in low content makes it less hazardous and consumable by humans. An exception is lead (3.222), which has the highest value, Excess lead in the body can cause brain damage, kidney problems, high blood pressure, anemia, and developmental delays. The qualitative phytochemical analysis of Parquetina nigrescens indicated that alkaloids and terpenoids were highly present the high level of alkaloids and terpenoids in Parquetina nigrescens made it a powerful plant for traditional medicine; supporting healing, immunity, and disease prevention. Tannins, phenols, and flavonoids were present in moderate quantity, suggesting that the plant can enhance therapeutic value, helping to fight infections and reduces inflammation,. However, oxalate, saponin, and glycosides were lightly present, with their presence helping to regulate excess calcium by binding to it, potentially preventing mineral overload, providing antioxidant and cholesterol-lowering effects, and strengthening heart contractions to support heart health. The quantitative phytochemical analysis of Parquetina nigrescens indicated the presence of glycosides (35.70 mg/g), phenols (21.30mg/100g), saponins (2.53), and terpenoids (2.485 mg/g) in high value. Parquetina nigrescens was found to be rich in carbohydrates, fiber, essential minerals, and phytochemicals like alkaloids, saponins, and flavonoids, which support immunity, heart health, and disease prevention. Despite a high lead content, its nutritional and medicinal properties make it valuable for traditional medicine.
