BRIQUETTE PRODUCTION FROM SUGARCANE BAGASSE AND ITS POTENTIAL AS A CLEAN SOURCE OF ENERGY IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This study examines the potential of briquettes produced from sugarcane bagasse as a clean and sustainable energy source in Nigeria, using clay as a binder. The production process involved carbonizing sugarcane bagasse, crushing and sieving the resulting charcoal powder, and combining it with clay binder to form briquettes. Two samples were analyzed: pure sugarcane bagasse (Sample A) and a mixture of sugarcane bagasse with charcoal dust (Sample B). The study assessed physical and combustion properties such as ash content, moisture content, calorific value, and burning rate. The results show that the inclusion of charcoal dust (Sample B) enhanced the briquette's performance. Sample B exhibited a lower ash content (8.43%) compared to Sample A (8.86%), indicating reduced residue and improved combustion. However, Sample B had higher moisture content (12.22% vs. 10.32%), potentially slowing ignition but not significantly hindering its overall performance. The calorific value analysis revealed that Sample B achieved higher temperatures, with a peak of 1000°C compared to 890°C for Sample A, demonstrating its superior energy density and combustion efficiency. The burning rate for Sample B was faster (3.8 min vs. 3.6 min for Sample A), reflecting a quicker release of energy suitable for high-heat applications. These findings suggest that combining sugarcane bagasse with charcoal dust improves energy efficiency and combustion properties, making it a viable alternative to traditional biomass fuels like firewood and charcoal. Furthermore, the briquettes demonstrated reduced environmental impact through lower emissions and residue. Scaling up production can address Nigeria’s energy challenges, reduce deforestation, and create economic opportunities in rural areas. Future research should focus on optimizing binder composition and moisture management to further enhance briquette performance and sustainability.
