SURVEY OF ECTOPARASITE IN OREOCHROMIS SPECIES FOUND IN HAUREN SHANU AND RAMIN BIRJI KANO STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This study investigates and compares the ectoparasite infestations in two species of tilapia, Oreochromis aureus and Oreochromis niloticus, sourced from various water bodies in Kano State, Nigeria. A total of 60 tilapia fish (100 per species) were examined for ectoparasites, including monogeneans, crustaceans, and ciliates, over a 3-month period. The results indicate that both species are commonly affected by ectoparasites, but with notable differences in prevalence and species composition. O. Aureus exhibited higher levels of infestation, particularly by monogeneans, whereas O. Niloticus showed more diversity in ectoparasitic species, with a greater incidence of crustaceans. The study also highlighted the environmental factors, such as water quality and temperature, that may influence ectoparasite prevalence. These findings provide valuable insights into the parasite dynamics of tilapia in Kano State and emphasize the need for effective management strategies to mitigate parasitic infections in aquaculture practices.
