EFFECT OF AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF MANGIFERA INDICA (MANGO) LEAF IN ALLOXAN INDUCED DIABETIC WISTER RATS
Abstract
This study investigates the antidiabetic potential of aqueous extracts of Mangifera indica leaves in managing hyperglycemia in alloxan-induced diabetic Wistar rats. The phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, phenols, alkaloids, and saponins, known for their antioxidant and hypoglycemic properties. Blood glucose levels were monitored in pre-induction, post-induction, and treatment phases. The extract demonstrated a dose-dependent hypoglycemic effect, with the highest dose (200 mg/kg) significantly reducing blood glucose levels (0.470 ± 0.057 mmol/dL), comparable to the standard drug, metformin (0.440 ± 0.037 mmol/dL). Additionally, histopathological findings indicated potential beta-cell regeneration in the pancreas. These results suggest that Mangifera indica leaf extract could serve as a natural, cost-effective alternative for diabetes management, with effects comparable to conventional treatments. Further research is recommended to explore its molecular mechanisms, long-term safety, and clinical applicability.
