EFFECT OF BALSAM APPLE (MOMORDICA BALSAMINA) SUPPLEMENTATION ON THE PRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCE OF BROILER CHICKENS BY DANIEL JAPHET
Abstract
ABSTRACT
This experiment was carried out to assess the effects of Momordica balsamina (balsam apple) on the productive performance of broiler chickens during the starter and finisher phases. A total of 150 broiler chicks were randomly assigned to five dietary treatments with varying inclusion levels of M. balsamina (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4%) in a completely Randomized Design (CRD) each treatment was replicated trice with ten birds each. The data collected was subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA). The means was separated using Duncan's multiple range test. Results showed no significant differences (P > 0.05) in feed intake, Body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and final weight at the starter and finisher phases. Economic analysis revealed that 0.1% inclusion had improved cost per gain at both phases of the growth. It was concluded from the study that Momordica balsamina had no detrimental effect on growth parameters and improved cost per gain in broiler chicken. Inclusion level of 0.1% is recommended for improved productivity.
