Abstract

ABSTRACT This study critically examines the role of Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area in promoting women empowerment between 2015 and 2025. The research focuses on identifying and evaluating various empowerment programs, policies, and initiatives implemented by the local government to enhance women’s socio-economic and political development. Particular attention is given to areas such as education, entrepreneurship, healthcare, political participation, and skill acquisition, which are considered key indicators of empowerment. A total of 200 structured questionnaires were administered across selected wards within Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area using a purposive sampling technique. Out of these, 180 questionnaires were duly completed and returned, representing a 90% response rate, which provided a solid basis for data analysis. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to determine the level of effectiveness of the local government’s empowerment initiatives. The findings reveal that while significant strides have been made in initiating programs aimed at improving the living standards and participation of women in various socio-economic activities, there are persistent challenges that hinder full realization of these goals. These challenges include inadequate funding, weak policy implementation, poor monitoring mechanisms, and deep-rooted cultural and religious barriers that often restrict women’s participation in public life.
