Abstract

This study examines the production and growth of ginger in Umuagwo, Imo State. Ginger is an important cash crop in Nigeria, contributing significantly to farmers’ income and national economic development. The study investigates the level of ginger production, factors influencing its growth, and challenges faced by farmers in the area. Data were collected through surveys and interviews with local farmers. Findings reveal that ginger production in Umuagwo is largely carried out by smallholder farmers using traditional methods. Factors such as soil fertility, climate conditions, access to farm inputs, and farmers’ experience influence production levels. Despite its potential, challenges such as inadequate funding, lack of modern farming techniques, poor storage facilities, and limited market access hinder optimal growth. The study concludes that ginger production in Umuagwo has strong potential for expansion and recommends improved agricultural support and modernization strategies.
