EVALUATION OF THE ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY, PHYTOCHEMICAL AND VITAMIN COMPOSITIONS OF AFRAMOMUM SCEPTRUM (ATARIKO)
Abstract
Aframomum sceptrum, commonly referred to as “Atariko”, is a spice from the Zingiberaceae family, traditionally utilized in various culinary and medicinal applications. Recent investigations into its biochemical properties have revealed significant antioxidant activity, a rich phytochemical profile, and notable vitamin content. This research aims to elaborate on these aspects. Utilizing gas chromatography for phytochemical analysis, spectroscopy for quantifying the antioxidants and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), analyzing both water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. Phytochemical screening assessed the presence of various bioactive compounds. The results demonstrated a high concentration of significant phytochemicals, including catechol (52.41042), (+)-pinoresinol (32.19830), pyrogallol (9.29059), and Assculetin (7.09445). Furthermore, the vitamin analysis revealed elevated levels of retinol (1.3805) and tocopherol (0.8978), indicating a robust vitamin profile. The antioxidant assays indicated normal antioxidant activity across the tested parameters. Aframomum sceptrum seeds exhibit a rich composition of phytochemicals and vitamins, alongside moderate antioxidant activity. A. sceptrum serves as a valuable source of natural antioxidants and essential nutrients, supporting its potential use in dietary and therapeutic applications.
