EVALUATION OF TOTAL COLIFORM BACTERIAL CONTAMINATIONS IN HOSTEL WATER SUPPLY AND ITS HEALTH IMPLICATIONS
Abstract
This study titled “Evaluation of Total Coliform Bacterial Contaminations in Hostel Water Supply and Its Health Implications” was conducted to assess the microbiological quality of tap water in male hostels at Bayero University Kano (Old Campus). Water samples were collected from Nana, R, and P Blocks and subjected to bacteriological analysis using Total Coliform Count and Most Probable Number (MPN) methods. The presence of coliform bacteria, including Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., and Enterobacter spp., was confirmed using Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) agar and biochemical tests. The results discovered that all 15 water samples were contaminated with coliforms, with MPN values ranging from 75 to 240 per 100 mL—exceeding the World Health Organization’s standard of zero coliforms per 100 mL of drinking water. This indicates significant public health risks and highlights the need for improved water treatment, regular monitoring, and sanitary education for students.
