EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT SPACING ON GROWTH AND YIELD COMPONENT OF ONION (ALLIUM CEPA L.)
Abstract
The experiment was conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture teaching and Demonstration farm,
Ramat Polytechnic, Maiduguri in September 2024 to assess the effect of different spacing on
growth and yield component of onion. The experiment was laid out in randomize complete block
design (RCBD) of factorial arrangement with three replications. The experiment was undertaken
to determine the effect of different spacing on growth and yield component of onion. Five different
spacing were taking viz 20cm x 15 cm, 20cm x 20cm, 20cm x 25cm, 20cm x 3Ocm and 20cm x
35cm. The result demonstrated that plant spacing had significant effect on growth, and
yieldcomponent of onion. However, the result from different spacing shows that 20cm x 25cm
produce the highest bulb diameter, bulb weight, and number of root, leave fresh weight and bulb
yield. Further results shows that wider spacing of 20cm x 25cm produce higher plant height and
number of leaves.
