Abstract

The study examined the socioeconomic impact of the September 10, 2024 flood incident in Maiduguri, Borno State, Nigeria. The research focused on identifying the causes of the flood, analyzing its spatial distribution, assessing its socioeconomic consequences, and evaluating mitigation and coping strategies adopted by residents and authorities. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and field observations. Findings revealed that the collapse of the Alau Dam was the primary cause of the flood, which affected over one million people and led to widespread displacement, infrastructural damage, and economic losses. The flood severely disrupted livelihoods, caused health risks such as waterborne diseases, and damaged public facilities. The study recommends improved drainage systems, effective urban planning, dam monitoring, and public awareness campaigns to mitigate future occurrences.
