ASSESSMENT OF INTRAOCULAR PRESSURE VISUAL ACUITY AND MEAN ARTERIAL BLOOD PRESSURE AMONG PATIENTS ATTENDING MURTALA MUHAMMAD SPECIALIST HOSPITAL, KANO STATE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Intraocular pressure is the fluid pressure inside the eye and the normal value is 10-21mmHg (Klein;, et al,1992). Blood pressure is the force that moves blood through the circulatory system. It is an important force because it allows the blood, which contains oxygen and nutrients, to travel around the body to nourish tissues and organs. The aim was to study the relationship between intraocular pressure, visual acuity and mean arterial blood pressure among patients attending MMSH. The objective of the study was to determine the value of Intraocular pressure, visual acuity and Mean Arterial Blood pressure among patients attending MMSH and to assess the association between Intraocular pressure, Visual Acuity and Mean Arterial Blood pressure among patients attending MMSH. This was a cross-sectional study conducted at MMSH Kano. The cross-sectional design allowed a snapshot of intraocular pressure, visual acuity and mean arterial blood pressure distributions in the selected population. Intraocular pressure of each subject was determined by the mean value of three successive readings for the right and the left eyes with a Tonometer.
Visual acuity was measured using Snellen chat and Jaeger chart for both distance and near distant vision. Blood pressure was measured using Sphygmomanometer to know the systole and diastole and later on MABP is calculated (MABP=DBP+1/3(SBP-DBP). In this cross-sectional study, we examined the association between MABP levels and IOP in patients attending MMSH. After adjusting for several confounding factors, It was observed that MABP levels and the prevalence of hypertension doesn't correlate with IOP levels and the prevalence of ocular hypertension, because there's no significance difference in IOPR and MABP (p= 0.218) and IOPL and MABPP (p= 0.088). There is no Significance nor association between Intraocular Pressure, Visual Acuity and Mean Arterial Blood Pressure among patients attending MMSH Kano.
