EFFECT OF E-COLI ON DURABILITY AND STRENGTH OF CONCRETE CONTAINING RICE HUSK ASH
Abstract
This research explores the effect of concrete containing Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Rice Husk Ash (RHA) on the durability and strength of concrete. The study aimed to evaluate the mechanical, durability, and microstructural properties of RHA and E-coli bacteria concrete. Objectives included assessing compressive, tensile strength, water absorption, and examining microstructural changes. Concrete samples were prepared with 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% RHA as partial cement replacements and treated with E- coli. Compressive strength and tensile split tests were conducted at 7, 14, and 28 days, while water absorption tests measured porosity. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyzed the microstructure. Results revealed that RHA at 5%-10% replacement enhanced compressive strength and reduced water absorption, with 5% RHA achieving the highest compressive strength of 23 N/mm² at 28 days. Microstructural analysis showed dense and compact structures at 10% RHA, supporting strength improvements. However, higher RHA contents increased porosity and reduced tensile strength. The study concludes that 5%-10% RHA replacement optimally balances strength and durability, while E-coli improves early-age properties and impermeability. Recommendations include utilizing RHA within the optimal range and further exploring microbial treatments to enhance concrete performance. This research demonstrates the potential of sustainable additives like RHA so as to reduce the effect pf E- coli in advance eco-friendly construction.
