Abstract

Maternal and infant mortality rates remain a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, particularly in regions like Yobe State, which face unique socio-economic and security challenges. Inefficient manual record-keeping, poor information dissemination, and difficulty in tracking patient appointments at healthcare facilities like the Yobe State Specialist Hospital, Damaturu, contribute to this problem. This project details the development of an Android-based Antenatal and Post-natal Information System designed to address these issues. The system provides a digital platform for healthcare providers to manage patient records, schedule appointments, and send automated reminders. It also serves as an information hub for expectant and new mothers, offering timely health tips, vaccination schedules, and emergency contact information. The system was designed using a three-tier architecture and implemented using Java/Kotlin for the Android front-end and a MySQL database with a PHP-based backend. The system's design, implementation, and testing are discussed, demonstrating its potential to improve the efficiency of maternal care delivery, enhance patient engagement, and ultimately contribute to better health outcomes for mothers and infants in Yobe State.
