A REFLECTION OF YOUTH'S ECONOMIC SELF-RELIANCE IN ISLAM AND ITS IMPACT ON THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF AKURELAND
Abstract
This study examines the concept of youth economic self-reliance within the framework of Islamic
teachings and its impact on the growth and development of Akureland. In Islam, economic self
reliance is strongly emphasized through principles such as lawful earnings (halal), diligence in
work, entrepreneurship, social responsibility, and the prohibition of idleness and dependency.
These values are rooted in the Qur’an and Hadith, which encourage productivity, accountability,
and wealth creation as acts of worship when pursued ethically. The study adopts a qualitative and
analytical approach, drawing from Islamic sources, relevant literature, and socio-economic
realities in Akureland. It explores how Islamic economic principles shape the attitudes and
behaviors of Muslim youth toward self-employment, vocational skills, and small-scale enterprises.
It further investigates the extent to which these principles contribute to reducing unemployment,
poverty alleviation, and community development within the region. Findings reveal that youth
who adhere to Islamic values of self-reliance tend to exhibit higher levels of discipline, resilience,
and entrepreneurial initiative, which positively influence local economic activities. However,
challenges such as limited access to capital, inadequate skill acquisition programs, and societal
pressures continue to hinder the full realization of these ideals. The study also highlights the role
of religious institutions, families, and community leaders in promoting economic empowerment
among youths. The paper concludes that fostering youth economic self-reliance in line with
Islamic teachings can significantly enhance sustainable development in Akureland. It recommends
the integration of faith-based economic orientation with practical empowerment programs,
improved access to financial resources, and stronger institutional support to maximize the
contributions of youths to regional growth and development.
