ANALYSIS AND BIO-APPLICATION OF FURFURAL SYTHENSIZED FROM SUGARCANE BAGASSE
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Furfural was produced from the hydrolysis of dried sugarcane bagasse biomass using dilute sulfuric acid as a catalyst. This process involved converting the pentosans in the bagasse into pentose, which was then cyclodehydrated into furfural. The reaction was carried out through a simple distillation method, yielding 30.8g of furfural. The product was identified through characterization using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS). The chromatogram displayed a dominant peak, indicating a single component. Furfural had a retention time of 5.604 minutes with a relative abundance of 100%. The mass spectrum showed a molecular ion peak at m/z 96, corresponding to the molecular formula of furfural (C5H4O2).
