Abstract

This study investigated students’ opinions on the positive and negative impacts of social media on their academic performance and peer interactions in a Nigerian university. The increasing integration of social media in education and daily life necessitated an assessment of how social media usage influences learning outcomes, social development, and overall well-being among undergraduates. The objectives of the study were to examine the positive effects of social media on academic performance, analyze its negative impacts on focus and time management, evaluate its role in shaping students’ social interactions, assess its influence on mental health and self esteem, and explore strategies for responsible and balanced use. Five research questions were raised to guide the study The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. A sample of 200 students from Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, was selected using random sampling, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire validated by 2 experts and tested for reliability (Cronbach Alpha = 0.80). Descriptive statistics, including mean, frequency, and standard deviation, were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that social media has both positive and negative impacts on students. It enhances access to educational resources (x̄ = 2.90), supports collaboration and understanding of academic topics (x̄ = 2.83), and fosters peer relationships (x̄ = 2.88). However, it also contributes to distraction and reduced concentration (x̄ = 2.90), procrastination (x̄ = 2.95), reduced productivity (x̄ = 2.95), weakened face-to-face communication skills (x̄ = 2.70), and mental health challenges. Students also recognized the need for strategies such as digital literacy programs (x̄ = 2.84) and self-regulation to mitigate negative effects. The study concluded that social media plays a dual role in academic and social development, emphasizing the importance of responsible usage. Recommendations include promoting digital literacy, incorporating guidance on social media use into curricula, and fostering awareness among students, parents, and educators.
